Recipe copyright law
Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 7:48PM In setting up the new site here I started posting some recipes to the Culinary journal area. I started to become a bit paranoid about take down notices coming into my inbox by the truckloads. I prompty did some research into the copyright laws surrounding recipes. You can find a very good explanation here.
Basically, a listing of ingredients is fair game as is the description on how to combine them. There is a grey area surrounding the description indicating that if the author used creativity or artistic expression in the directions then you may not copy the directions and post them verbatim. I quickly went in and paraphrased my recipe directions thus making them completely legal. As a practice I will start to post where I got the recipe in the first place to give the artist their due props.
